Prostate Problems

The prostate gland  is only found in men. It lies just beneath the bladder. It is normally about the size of a chestnut.

If a doctor suspects that you may have prostate problem, he or she will usually:

Examine the prostate gland. They do this by inserting a gloved finger through the anus into the rectum to feel the back of the prostate gland.

Do a blood test to measure the level of prostate specific antigen (PSA). PSA is a chemical which is made by both normal and cancerous prostate cells. Basically, the higher the level of PSA, the more likely that you have cancer of the prostate. However, a mild-to-moderately raised PSA can occur in conditions other than prostate cancer.

Please make an appointment with your doctor if you have any cocnerns.

Erectile dysfunction (ED) means that you cannot get and/or maintain an erection. In some cases the penis becomes partly erect, but not hard enough to have sex properly. In some cases, there is no swelling or fullness of the penis at all. ED is sometimes called impotence.

Please do not be embarrassed about ED, most men will experience it at some stage in their life, and even in their 20’s!

Feel free to discuss this with your doctor, as they are comfortable talking about this issue.
